Terrible, Horrible

Today could be classified as a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. This morning we found out that the father of a girl in Maysen's church class was killed in a car accident early today.  Our heart is breaking for her.  He was also the Sunday School teacher of all of my beehives. Their heart is breaking.  It is terrible and horrible.

Maysen and Stockton got their school schedule today.  Stockton has choir.  We did not know that was going to happen.  He was not thrilled. After talking to the school classes and having the other options explained, he decided to stick with choir.

Maysen wasn't given a third period class at all.  She also wasn't given a math class.  Too bad this is the first year her grades count.  In order to get the regents scholarship you need math all four years.  We went down to the school to fix the problem.  Now Maysen has decisions to make.  None of them ideal. Maysen is taking two Honors classes (English and Biology) and one AP class (Geography).  She wanted to take a regular math class.  Unlike Stockton, she does not enjoy math.  It does not come easy to her.  She has always received straight A's, except she got a B in math.  Because she has so many Honors classes, her only option is to take Honors Math, or drop one of her other Honors classes, or drop French 2.  Maysen really doesn't want to take Honors Math because this year her grades count, and because she already has a tough schedule.  We can't decide which class to drop.  English is not an option, obviously.  I don't want Maysen to drop AP Geography.  I know she can pass the test at the end of the year.  It would be a waste not to take advantage of this.  Maysen doesn't want to drop Honors Biology. She said, "I worked so hard to get into that class."  I am also not sure if they offer regular biology.  Biology is a must this year.  If she wants to get the Regents Scholarship, she will need biology, chemistry and physics.  If she doesn't take biology she has to take earth science.  I think biology would be the much better option.  I was also looking forward to Honors Biology because Maysen is SO SMART in science, but she has always hated it.  I think some of the reason is because the classes move slow.  I was hoping the Honors class would be more enjoyable to her.  Changing Maysen out of French is not an option.  If she was taking Spanish it would be no problem, but French 2 is only offered one period.  First of all, Maysen loves French.  If she took Spanish she would have to take Spanish 1 with all of the 8th graders. Her plan was to take French 2 this year and French 3 in High School. She has also thought about the idea of teaching French when she is older.  The other option is to have Maysen sit by herself third period and take an online math class through the district.  I looked at their website and right now it has them offering Algebra, Geometry etc.  The problem with this is Utah has changed the way they do math.  Maysen's year is the first year that is effected.  Now they teach math a little algebra, a little geometry, a little whatever each year.  If she took a regular class it would mess her up for the rest of her high school.  No good options.

Another disappointing thing about Maysen's schedule was she had signed up to take sewing.  She was really excited about this class and had heard really good things about it from her friends.  She had been asking me to teach her how to sew for a long time now, but I have no idea how to do it myself.  We were really excited about this opportunity. She didn't get sewing.  They put her as a teachers aide.  I asked about this as well.  They said that they didn't have enough interest so they cancelled the class.  That is so disappointing for us!   But, at least her dad didn't die this morning, so there is that.
